Participants in the paramedics' training course at the Academy of Military Medicine recently practiced providing medical care in an urban environment as part of the course's tactical training. Under the supervision of reserve paramedics from special units, the soldiers practiced handling a mass-casualty event while under constant fire.

The exercise simulated the circumstances of urban combat for which the soldiers prepare, including threats such as gunfire and explosions, in addition to large numbers of injured soldiers. The drill, which was held at Training Base 10, also involved soldiers of the undercover unit of the Border Police.

"This exercise simulates a comprehensive war, and it is very important for the training of paramedics," explained Lt. Col. Dr. Ayal Forman, who heads the commanders' track at Training Base 10. "It is the concluding exercise of the course, and here they actually implement everything that they have learned so far. They act according to the updated doctrine of [medical] care under fire in an urban area, while receiving directions and feedback from the best paramedics in Israel."

"We understand the importance of this activity for the combat units at all times, during both emergencies and routine situations," he added. "They learn the nature of the threats to the operational activity and the importance of their being prepared for every command in the field."
